Do`s and Don'ts in a family or couple photo shoot?

Family photo shoot in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Well there is practically none, really. Photography sessions are so fast and fluid that it is very hard to force a good photo and most of the time you and even the photographer don’t know at what time beauty unfolds in front of the camera. The job of a good photographer is to stay attentive, know where to stand and to be ready when “THE moment” comes up. Of course you can manipulate and control shootings by implementing poses but most of the times you get the best shots out of unexpected situations. When people ask me how to pose or what to do with their faces I always get a bit intimidated. My answer is always short and I am sort of saying: “Try to stay you” or “make minimalistic changes”. We are photographers, we think in technical terms, exposure, rules of composition and light. If you feel like modelling, thats good, but we are not the ones to teach you that. Don’t try to be someone you are not. It is one thing to be a trained model and another to be an authentic person. Your family and friends at home will appreciate and connect emotionally much more with the candid shots than the posed ones. They want to recognise you, they want to see who you really are and not what you’d like to be. Doing photo sessions in the Mexican Riviera Maya is a blessed situation for any photographer. People that come to Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Cancun come mostly for vacationing and have an excellent mood and normally they bring their good vibes to the shoot. And thats what our photo sessions should be about. Connect and have a good time together.
